Kew Garden Hills, NY 11367
Neighborhood Description:
Kew Gardens Hills, a farm until the 1930's, was founded by Abraham Wolosof who built a small community of homes and apartments on the farmland he purchased. Shortly thereafter, improved transportation, the expansion of the subway system, the inclusion of Kew Gardens on the Grand Central Parkway, and the paving of Queens Boulevard, attracted 1,200 new residents, builders and developers. The opening of the World's Fair also stimulated growth. Early residents were predominantly German, Irish and Italian families moving from Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Today Kew Garden Hills is an ethnically mixed neighborhood. However, the Orthodox Jewish Community took root in 1950 when 15 families founded the congregation of Young Israel. There are now at least 20 synagogues, large and small in the area.
Geographic Boundaries:
Kew Garden Hills is bound by Union Turnpike to the South, Park Drive East to the West, Parsons Boulevard to the East and Mellbourne Avenue to the North.
